Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common complaint among today’s athletes and active adults. Because the knees are often the most used joints in the body, and they carry a lot of weight and pressure, it’s not surprising that they can easily be injured.

Knee pain can either be acute (associated with sudden injury) or chronic (lasting more than three months). Although it can be attributed to injuries from sports, recreational activities, or work, it can also develop over time from normal wear and tear conditions, such as osteoarthritis, or other underlying conditions that commonly affect the knees.

Common Knee Injuries

  • Sprains or strains, which often occur in the ligaments or muscle tendons that connect and support the patella (kneecap).
  • Ligament tears that commonly happen to athletes in their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL). The knee is flexible enough to twist and turn, but these ligaments can tear painfully due to excessive force.
  • Runner’s Knee is a common sports injury that occurs when the kneecap does not track properly in its grove.
  • Meniscus tears of the rubbery cartilage that cushions the knee joint can occur due to injury or wear and tear.
  • Fractures of the kneecap are commonly caused by falls or abnormally hard impact to the knee.
  • Overuse injuries are caused by repetitive use of the knee. A common overuse condition is tendonitis, which refers to inflammation and pain in the tendons surrounding the knee.
  • Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) is the most common cause of inflammation in the knee joint, in which cartilage wears down and bones rub together, causing limited mobility and severe pain.

Because there are so many types of injuries and conditions that may be the source of your knee pain, it is important that the cause of your pain be properly diagnosed by a qualified physician, like the orthopedic and sports injury specialists at Reagan Integrated Sports Medicine.

Our highly trained doctors will check for injuries, tenderness, and swelling, and test your range of motion and stability of the ligaments. If an injury to the muscles, tendons, or ligaments of the knee joint is suspected, we may order diagnostic imaging such as X-ray, ultrasound , or MRI for further investigation in order to reach an accurate diagnosis.  Then we will devise a treatment plan using our wide range of sports medicine and regenerative services to get you back to what you love as swiftly as possible.
