Regenerative Cell Therapy

Regenerative cell treatment is highly effective at relieving pain, regenerating injured tissue, and speeding up the healing process.  It is a minimally invasive procedure that many patients opt for as a safe alternative to surgery or drugs. The procedure involves a simple injection and does not involve any downtime after treatment. The treatment can provide long-lasting relief from both acute and chronic pain.

Stem cells are the initial cells from which all types of cells in your body are created. What makes them unique from other types of cells is that they can reproduce themselves and become a different type of cell to serve a particular function. When a stem cell is injected into injured tissue, it reproduces and effectively replaces the damaged tissue with a healthier version.

With the field of regenerative medicine growing so quickly, it’s important to understand the types of stem cell therapies that are available to you.  The term is widely used to refer to any treatment that contains stem cells but not all stem cells are equal.  Regenerative cells are often harvested from your own fat or bone marrow through costly, invasive, in-office procedures. The cells are then processed and reinjected back into your body.  The problem with harvesting stem cells from yourself is that they are the same age as you and aged stem cells are not as efficient as younger stem cells in their healing and regenerative abilities. This decrease in effectiveness becomes more noticeable as we approach 30 years old. This is why children heal so much faster than adults do; their stem cells are young, numerous, and vibrant.

The treatments that we prefer at Reagan Integrated Sports Medicine, utilize mesenchymal stem cells from donated umbilical cord tissue.  These potent cells are derived from the Wharton’s jelly portion of the cord. This valuable substance—safely and painlessly collected from the umbilical cords of newborns during scheduled cesarean deliveries—yields an incredibly high concentration of mesenchymal stem cells.

Wharton’s jelly-derived stem cell preparations contain up to 80% mesenchymal stem cells, as opposed to conventional umbilical cord blood, which typically has only a 3 to 5% concentration. That is why Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells are such an effective regenerative treatment. These young stem cells are injected into the affected area, delivering an intense boost of regenerative power. These new stem cells have virtually no chance of being rejected when introduced to the body.  Our medical clinic sources our stem cells from established tissue banks that operate under strict compliance with FDA and American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) regulations.

Conditions Treated with Regenerative Cell Therapy

When mesenchymal stem cells are injected into your injured tissue, their incredible regenerative power immediately begins to repair the damage. Common conditions that respond exceptionally well to stem cell treatment include:

  • Knee injuries and damaged cartilage
  • Sciatica and other conditions causing back pain
  • Nerve damage, including peripheral neuropathy
  • Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and different types of arthritis
  • Plantar fasciitis and other foot injuries
  • Bone problems
  • Hip pain
  • Elbow, shoulder, or other joint pain
  • Neck pain
  • Ligament tears
  • Tendonitis
