Muscle Strains

One of the most common sports-related injuries involves muscle strains or tendon due to overuse, overstretching, repetitive motion, or direct impact.

Although muscle strains may seem relatively minor compared to more serious injuries like fractures or concussions, they nonetheless can cause pain, weakness, cramping, spasms, and swelling that may hinder and limit your mobility, and severe sprains may result in muscle tearing that may take weeks, if not months, to heal.

You may be especially at risk for muscle strains if you participate in extreme sports or other challenging physical activities, or if you are overweight or your body is deconditioned.

Strains may be prevented by exercising your muscles regularly and eating a healthy diet. You can also help prevent sprains by warming up and cooling down before and after your exercise routine. You should also wear proper footwear and safety equipment to protect yourself.

If you sustain a muscle injury on the playing field, you should immediately elevate your joint and apply cold packs to prevent swelling until you obtain medical attention.

Mild muscle sprains and strains may benefit from physical therapy following injury, while more severe sprains and strains may require surgery or immobilization with a brace or splint for healing.  At Reagan Integrated Sports Medicine, we have an arsenal of techniques to help your muscle strain heal more quickly.  From High-Intensity laser therapy, Shockwave, and PRP Therapy to Physical Therapy and specialty taping, we have something to help you feel better and get back to what you love.
