Road to Recovery from a Broken Bone

July 9, 2021

Recovering patient

A fall, a car accident, a sports injury, or even repetitive motions can cause a broken bone. Once you receive medical treatment to stabilize the bone, your sports medicine doctor will help you recover as quickly and completely as possible from your fracture.

While your bone heals, you will need to keep the bone strong while also trying to avoid muscle atrophy in the area as much as possible. All of this will mean getting enough exercise in the area while also not putting pressure on it.

Let’s talk about some of the key things you can anticipate during the recovery phase after suffering a broken bone, and where you can go here in Dallas for outstanding orthopedic care for your bone fracture.

How Do I Know if I Have a Broken Bone?

When you break a bone, the strength and capability of that part of the body suddenly weaken substantially. The fracture can occur due to blunt-force trauma, repetitive motion, or bone disease such as osteoporosis.

Symptoms of a bone fracture include:

  • Sudden pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Inability to bear weight (as with a leg, ankle, or hip)
  • Bone or joint deformity

While the abovementioned symptoms do not confirm a broken bone, they help the physician in the diagnosis – along with a physical examination and an X-ray. If those are not conclusive, you may be asked to undergo an MRI and/or a CAT scan for a more detailed, in-depth evaluation.

How Can a Sports Medicine Doctor Help Me Recover from a Fracture?

With most fractures, stabilization of the bone with a plaster cast is essential. You may wear the cast for six weeks or so, depending on the severity of the injury.

After this period of time, you may get a new, shorter cast in order to enable you to move more easily, depending on the location of the break. For example, you may go from having a full-leg cast to a half-leg cast on your lower leg, or a “walking cast.”

In addition, your sports medicine doctor will prescribe physical therapy to help you develop:

  • Increased strength, range of motion, and flexibility
  • Ability to perform activities of daily living successfully and safely
  • Proper gait, balance, and/or movement
  • New ways to train for sports or to get ready for exercise
