Knee Pain: Treatment for Athletes

December 16, 2022

Athletes are always looking for an edge to help them perform at their best. Unfortunately, injuries are a common part of playing sports. Knee pain is a particularly common problem for athletes due to the stress that is placed on the joints during activities such as running and jumping.

If you are an athlete, you may have already experienced some of the most common knee injuries: ACL tears, PCL tears, meniscus tears, patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), and fractures. These injuries are not only painful but prevent you from participating in your game. As an athlete, being sidelined by an injury is one of the worst things that can happen.

You may be familiar with the RICE method of treating sports injuries, however, experts in sports medicine and rehabilitation can offer you a variety of advanced treatments for knee injuries, the kind that can help you get back to your game sooner.

In this article, we will discuss dry needling, chiropractic care, PRP therapy, and Prolozone therapy, and their use in treating knee pain.

Advanced Knee Injury and Knee Pain Treatments for Athletes

Dry Needling

This type of therapy involves inserting needles into the muscles in order to stimulate them and improve blood flow. Dry needling can also help to release knots or trigger points that may be causing pain and is used to treat patients with knee pain from arthritis, post-surgical knee pain, and knee pain from sports injuries.

Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic specialists can help with knee pain in a number of ways, including using manual manipulation to restore alignment to the joints and muscles around the knee, which help reduce inflammation and pain. They can also provide recommendations on exercises or stretches that can help improve flexibility and strength in the area, as well as provide guidance on how to modify activities or training regimens to avoid aggravating existing knee pain or causing new injuries.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy

PRP therapy is a type of treatment that uses the patient’s own blood to create a concentrated, platelet-rich plasma. A small amount of blood is taken from the patient, processed in a centrifuge, and the resulting plasma is injected into the injured area. The platelets in the blood help to promote healing and reduce inflammation. PRP therapy has been shown to be remarkably effective in helping damaged tendons heal and repair themselves.

Prolozone Therapy

Prolozone therapy is a type of regenerative medicine that can help reduce knee pain experienced by athletes. The therapy involves injecting ozone – which is the most active form of oxygen – into the affected area to stimulate healing and regeneration. This can help reduce inflammation, improve blood circulation, and promote the growth of new tissue. Prolozone therapy can be an effective treatment for athletes who are dealing with chronic knee pain or those who have suffered an injury.

All of these advanced knee pain treatment options can help athletes with knee pain, so they can get back out on the field or court and perform at their best. Of course, no treatment and rehabilitation for athletes are complete without physical therapy sessions, which, in the case of knee pain, effectively improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion.
