How the Active Release Technique Can Help with Scar Tissue

February 17, 2023

Myofascial release

If you’ve experienced trauma from an accident but aren’t sure where to start with your treatment, you may want to look into the active release technique. The active release technique is a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment method that uses deep tissue massage therapy techniques to reduce pain caused by a buildup of scar tissue.

Let’s discuss exactly what the active release technique is, what it involves, and the benefits of receiving regular treatment sessions.

What is the Active Release Technique?

The active release technique (ART) is an effective hands-on treatment for patients who are suffering from a post-surgical or traumatic injury. Similar to massage therapy, ART uses massage-based movement techniques to manipulate the soft tissues of the body and reduce discomfort caused by a buildup of scar tissue on or around muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. There are more than 500 different massage techniques that physicians can use for your treatment. We encourage patients to turn to ART to reduce their unwanted pain, in addition to other pain management methods for ultimate results.

What Does the Active Release Technique Treat?

ART is generally used to treat a buildup of scar tissue in areas of the body that may have succumb to trauma in the form of an accident or collision. ART is also commonly used to treat the following:

  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headaches
  • Knee problems
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sciatica
  • Shin splints
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tennis elbow

The list of conditions above is by no means comprehensive. If you feel you may be a good candidate for ART treatment sessions, we encourage you to reach out to the providers at Reagan Integrated Sports Medicine for more information. In addition to treating the conditions above, ART treatments can also enhance mobility and flexibility in the treated areas, release entrapped nerves, and decrease general radiating pain.

What to Expect from the Active Release Technique?

Your ART treatment will be comprised of two parts: an examination and the actual treatment. During your examination, your physician will ask you about your medical history. We ask that you be thorough with your provider to ensure they fully understand the extent of your injuries. Your examination will also include a physical portion, in which your provider will detect areas that are affected by scar tissue.

During your treatment, your provider will use a combination of hands-on, massage-based techniques to soften the scar tissue in your affected areas. Many patients say these techniques feel similar to a deep tissue massage and that treatment sessions are often a relaxing experience. Your provider may recommend multiple ART treatments to achieve desired results.
