Exploring the Different Types of Joint Pain

July 14, 2023

Senior Lady Suffering with Joint Pain

There are many joints located throughout your body, connecting bones together and allowingyouto move and function well. However, due to daily demands on the body and medical conditions, you may experience pain in some joints.

Joint pain is a very common cause of complaint among Americans. There are many different causes and underlying reasons for it. Let’s talk about the different types of joint pain and where you can go in Dallas to receive expert treatment.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that causes the accelerated breakdown of cartilage that cushions joints. As the cartilage wears away, bones can rub against each other, which causes joint pain, stiffness, inflammation, and limited range of motion. It often affects the weight-bearing joints in the hips, knees, spine, and feet.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, leading to chronic inflammation. RA typically attacks the smaller joints in the hands and feet and causes pain, warmth, and stiffness. RA usually affects multiple joints symmetrically. Over time, if left untreated, rheumatoid arthritis can result in joint deformities and erosion of joint tissue.

Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis that develops when the kidneys do not filter out uric acid effectively, and it starts to build up in the joints. The accumulation of uric acid can cause sudden and severe joint pain, usually in the big toe. However, it can also affect other small joints in the toes, as well as those in the ankles, knees, wrists, and fingers. Gout attacks are characterized by intense joint pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness.

Bursitis

Bursitis refers to when a bursa, which is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions and reduces friction between tissues in the body, becomes inflamed. When this happens, the bursa swells, and the area surrounding it, including the nearby joint, become tender and painful. Bursitis commonly affects the joints in the shoulder, elbow, and hip.

Injuries

Joint pain can also be a result of a sports-related injury. Injuries that cause joint pain include sprains, strains, dislocations, and fractures, which can also result in the erosion of protective cartilage in joints.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis refers to the inflammation of a tendon, the fibrous tissue that connects muscles to bones. Due to overuse or repetitive motions, tendons can become inflamed, and since the tendons are one of the soft tissues that surround the joint, tendon injuries can also lead to joint pain and tenderness, and difficulty in moving the joint. Common areas of tendonitis include the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankle.
