Lower Back Pain Treatment Options

April 8, 2022

Doctor Analysing the x-ray for lower back pain treatment

Low back pain is deemed the “scourge of mankind”—and for obvious reasons. It is not only annoying; it can also be debilitating and disruptive, In fact, it is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States and of lost wages due to missed work.

Fortunately, there is now a wide range of treatment options for back pain. Finally, you’re no longer stuck between two options: medications and surgery.

A chiropractor is your go-to expert if you want to take a non-drug, non-surgical approach to treat your low back pain. They’ll first assess your condition to determine the suitable option for you. Below, you’ll learn about a few of the various treatment options a chiropractor offers.

Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression is a technique that involves your chiropractor utilizing a traction table or a similar device to gently stretch your spine, reposition your discs, and consequently take pressure off the nearby nerve/s. The force and duration of the traction can be adjusted (i.e., decreased or increased) during each treatment cycle.

Treatment takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes over 4 to 6 weeks. It’s essential to have this treatment performed only by a licensed chiropractor to ensure your safety and its efficacy.

Chiropractic Adjustment

Also known as spinal manipulation, a chiropractic adjustment involves your chiropractor carefully applying short, quick, and precise thrusts to your spinal joints. The amount of force they apply can vary, but the thrusts are aimed at moving the joints more than they would on their own. The goal is to improve its range of motion and alignment as well as provide pain relief.

Treatment will gradually decrease in intensity and frequency as your condition improves. Your chiropractor may also use spinal manipulation in conjunction with other treatment modalities.

Active Release Techniques

Your chiropractor may also use Active Release Techniques (ART), in which they apply deep pressure to soft tissues in your back to break up adhesions in them, thereby releasing the tension and taking the pressure off the entrapped nerves or blood vessels. ART has been shown to effectively treat back pain due to sciatica, strains, or sprains.

ART is a targeted treatment, and you can expect significant improvement in your symptoms within two to four weeks or three to six visits.
