What Is in Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections?

You’ve probably heard celebrity athletes like Tiger Woods talk about PRP injections on TV or social media. But do you know what exactly is in them, how they work, and what makes them unlike any other treatment modality? Below, we’ll talk about the component of PRP injections and how you could benefit from this innovative treatment if you have a musculoskeletal condition or injury.

What Do Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections Contain?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are derived from the patient’s own blood. PRP consists of two elements: platelets, which are the tiny, colorless cell fragments that circulate in your blood and help to stop bleeding by clumping and forming plugs at sites of injury; and plasma, which is the liquid portion of your blood.

After a healthcare professional takes a sample of your blood, they run it through a centrifuge to produce a concentrated solution of the platelets and plasma. The solution is then injected into the diseased or injured area/s of your body.

PRP injections contain a much higher concentration of growth factors – more than five times – than what is found in normal circulating blood. Growth factors orchestrate the complete sequence of cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration, which are the very processes essential for healing.

What Can PRP Injections Treat?

PRP injections have a variety of applications. They can be used for treating a wide range of acute and chronic musculoskeletal problems, including knee arthritis as well as sports injuries, such as plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and mild to moderate rotator cuff tears.

PRP therapy has shown to be an excellent adjunct to other nonoperative modalities, such as physical therapy, as it helps delay or even eliminate the need for surgical intervention.

Because PRP therapy is autologous (it comes from the patient’s own body), it poses little to no risk of complications. Moreover, given its minimally invasive nature, PRP therapy is generally well tolerated and involves less downtime. Just make sure to avoid strenuous activities after your session.
