Back Pain After a Sports Injury? 3 Ways to Get Back Moving Again

September 16, 2022

Lingering back pain is a very common problem after sustaining a back injury. If you have injured your back, whether it’s a muscle or ligament strain, or slippage of a vertebra, you need to give it time to heal completely and use treatments that can relieve pain and boost your body’s ability to recover. Consult a rehabilitation specialist in Dallas/Fort Worth to find out what therapies are appropriate for you and will give you desired results.

There are different treatments for back pain after a sports injury, and in this article, we will discuss three tried and tested methods that may be able to give you lasting relief from your symptoms.

#1 Apply Ice or A Warm Heating Pad or Compress to The Painful Area

A simple but effective treatment for back pain is temperature therapy. Ice is typically used for acute injuries, which controls swelling, while heat is better for chronic pain since it causes relaxation of the muscles and boosts circulation. To apply ice, wrap an ice pack in a towel and place it on the injured area for 15-20 minutes. You can do this several times a day, as needed. To apply heat, use a heating pad set on low or warm and place it on the injured area for 15-20 minutes at a time. You can also use a warm compress. Again, you can do this several times per day, as needed.

#2 Do Physical Therapy Exercises

After a sports injury, it is important to do physical therapy exercises for your back in order to prevent further injury and help you heal properly. While you should rest, it is also important not to remain still all of the time. Gentle movements can help you heal and reduce pain. Stretching exercises can help loosen up the muscles and provide relief from back pain. Strengthening exercises make the muscles stronger, which also contributes to pain relief. Be very careful when exercising with pain from a back injury. It’s best to consult a licensed professional providing physical therapy services. A physical therapy provider will not only guide you through exercises but can also use different modalities to control pain, including ice and heat therapy, massage therapy, the active release technique, and dry needling.

#3 Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic treatment for your back after a sports injury can help to speed up the healing process and reduce pain, especially if the injury is a displaced vertebra. Realignment results in the improvement of range of motion and reducing pressure on the nerves that may be causing pain. Chiropractors don’t just use spinal manipulation, they also use a variety of techniques to improve the symptoms such as massage therapy, including myofascial release therapy.
